'Candy game'
The legal representative, presenting evidence, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.
She said his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he ran.
The man engaged in a "candy game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".
She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the boys "for many years", and children had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She explained the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in recently.
The legal representative stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had concerns about what was going on, with valid cause.
"They chose" to examine in the defendant's belongings."
The prosecutor explained objects including lubricant, Vaseline and medical needles were found, and his family member contacted the authorities about his concerns.
She stated the defendant went on to engage in the "sweet game" with six children that evening - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.
"The police had not responded by that stage," she continued.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, had stated that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the police a second time.
She said the man then played the "treat game" in a room of five children.
